Heat Hits UK Gambling Searches & Revenue

Maybe just mad dogs these days.
Soaring temperatures have been bad news for UK gambling operators.
According to a recent report in Gaming Sector Report, Google gambling searches from the UK were down 34% this July from the same period last year. July 2013, not coincidentally, was also the third hottest July in Britain since 1910 with soaring temperatures and below average rainfall.
All that heat distracted Brits from gambling on all fronts (including bingo!). The biggest hits came in the casino market where searches were down 35% and in sports betting where they were down 31%. Bingo and poker saw the smallest drop offs losing 16% and 18% each.
Hot weather is also being blamed for lower earnings by some big name operators with strong ties to England, like Ladbrokes. The UK-based bookmaker said that business was down 15% in their betting shops and 9% on machines during the dog days.
Company officials were quick to point out that they saw the decline as a one-off event, rather than a long-term trend. They fully expect Brits to be back on the fruit machines as soon as cooler weather arrives.
While a heat-related decline in gambling-related searches and operator profits is no laughing matter, it does suggest a change in the English character. After all, these are the same people who inspired songwriter Noel Coward to write, “Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.”

Who’s Crushing It In 2013?
Mr. Green
Despite its decidedly Gaelic look-and-feel, Mr. Green actually began its life as a Swedish gaming site back in 2008. Since then, the cash-colored operator has branched out to serve markets across the globe. The company prides itself on sticking to basic casino games and doesn’t stray too far from its core competencies.

British isles Sportsbetting Tax Could Be a Recreation Changer
A new UK gambling tax on remote gambling sites could radically shift the way bookmakers do business with Brits. The consumption tax, which charges 15% on bets placed with offshore bookmakers will impact some of the biggest names in the business, including William Hill and Ladbrokes. (Both companies have servers based in Gibraltar.)
UK gaming regulators are looking to make as much as £300 million pounds ($ 467 million) by closing a loophole that allowed UK-based online bookmakers to base their operations offshore while enjoying a 1% tax on wagers. To add icing on the cake, the tax capped off at £425,000 ($ 662,000 USD).
How the big operators will react to the tax, which doesn’t go into effect until December 2014, is still up in the air. Some analysts are suggesting that the tax could shift the industry’s focus from the UK to Europe and Australia. (Sports wagering is taxed at 3%-4% in Australia.)
While it’s doubtful that William Hill will pull out of the UK market, it’s almost certain that the big names will protest the tax in some form.
Last year Girbraltar-based operators (which include England’s 10 biggest igaming shops) banded together to form the Gibraltar Betting and Gaming Association to fight the tax. They’ve also suggested that the law could be in violation of European Union trade agreements because of the impact it would have on the Gibraltar economy.
UK lawmakers have warned operators who try to skirt the tax by licensing elsewhere could face serious consequences, including having their sites blocked.
Do you think this tax is going to have a negative impact on the UK sports betting business? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Gambling News Roundup: August eighteen-24

Wynn is ready to take on New Jersey.
As summer wanes, the Gambling industry is getting back to work with interesting news tidbits on all fronts.
Not surprisingly, the rush towards regulated gaming in the United States is continuing full bore, while European operators continue entering the kinds of sponsorship deals that would have US sports commissioners clutching their pearls.
Here’s what you need to know from the week that was…
Gambling News
- California Ices Online Poker Bill – Will California ever get into the regulated online poker business? If the number of dead poker bills on the legislative floor are any indication, the answer is an emphatic, “no.” This week yet another bill was shelved after Cali’s many gambling factions failed to agree on, literally, any part of the bill. Keep trying Golden State!
- Wynn Applies for New Jersey Online License – Wynn Resorts filed an application for a New Jersey Internet gambling license. Though the company neither operates a casino in Atlantic nor partnered with one, it’s expected that one of those events will occur after the license is approved.
- BetOnline Unveils Strip Sports Betting – In an attempt to drum up interest in live-betting on US football will be hosting a strip betting feature during Sunday and Monday night NFL games that is exactly what it sounds like. While this is no doubt appealing to casual fans, others might have trouble getting past the, “ick,” factor.
- Paddy Power Partners with Arsenal – Paddy Power just signed a three-year deal with the Arsenal Football Club to be their official betting partner in the UK, Ireland and Italy. This is an extension of a previous partnership between the two brands.
SEO News
- Google Highlights In-Depth Content – Google will be highlighting heavy content that’s been marked up as, “in-depth.” This could be a chance for smaller publishers to compete with big brands that aren’t interested in producing beefy content. (Though some SEO’s have already complained that the new feature already favors web publishing heavies like the New York Times.)
- No Connection Between +1′s and Rankings – In response to an SEOMoz story that implied a connection between +1′s and Page Ranks, Matt Cutts said that there is no connection. Cutts says that great content gets shared and ranks better all on its own. So there.

William Hill Leaves China
William Hill has abruptly exited the Chinese online gambling market this week because of, “regulatory reasons.” It’s a move that cuts off access to a huge range of of Chinese gamblers, but is probably a good, long-term move.
The announcement was sent out to affiliates last week and stated:
We regret to inform you that William Hill has taken a decision to withdraw all of its online betting and gaming services for all residents of China for the foreseeable future. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you; however this decision has been taken for regulatory reasons beyond our control.
Chinese nationals with William Hill accounts are now barred from placing further wagers, but will be able to withdraw the funds currently in their accounts.
Though online gambling is currently illegal in China, it’s widely considered to be one of the largest untapped gambling markets on the planet. Cutting off Chinese players today may be a good long-term strategy for companies that hope to do regulated business in China (should that day ever come).
Affiliate partners who are interested in working with William Hill serving gamblers pretty much everywhere except China, can sign up as an affiliate through the CAP Network.
What do you think of William Hill’s decision to quit serving Chinese gamblers? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Gambling News Roundup – August 11-17, 2013

Arsenal teams up with Bodog
As August rolls on, a good chunk of the European igaming business is on holiday, as are many of their North American and Asian counterparts.
All that rest and relaxation didn’t completely kill the headline news from the industry.
Here’s some of the top news stories from the last week in gambling and SEO.
Gambling News
- Opap Deal Goes Through – The Greek government’s deal to sell off a third of Opap, its gambling monopoly, to a Czech hedge fund for â¬652 million ($ 870.52 million). This deal is by no means a done deal. Some European operators are saying that it violates European Union trade laws and should be squashed.
- Arsenal Partners with Bodog – Bodog is hoping to capitalize on Arsenal’s huge Asian fan base with a new, three-year sponsorship deal. The online gambling giant’s partnership with the Premier League heavyweight should generate plenty of marketing momentum for Bodog partners without destroying the integrity of the game. (Did you hear that, Roger Goodell?)
- Pete Rose Opens Up – Sports betting posterboy Pete Rose (who is himself a giant hypocrite) opened up about the hypocrisy of his ban for sports betting, while other more serious crimes are overlooked saying: I should have picked drugs or I should have picked up beating up my wife or girlfriend because if you do those three, you get a second chance.
Other News
- Bitcoins are Real Currency – A Texas judge declared Bitcoins to be, “real currency,” in a Federal Court. The ruling was in response to a con man who said he hadn’t committed fraud because he only stole Bitcoins. (Nice try, guy.)
- Use No Follow on Embedded Widgets – Matt Cutts video advice barrage continued this week as addressed the SEO challenges associated with embedded widgets. His advice, use a no-follow tag to avoid getting dinged by spam filters.
Finally
- Gambling Winnings Can Be Garnished – If you’re a Chicago-area deadbeat dad who also happens to be a successful gambler, we’ve got some bad news. The state of Illinois just passed a law that allows gambling establishments to garnish payouts to pay off late child support payments. The measure could bring in as much as $ 1 million a year.

Greek Government Completes Opap Sale
Greece has taken austerity to a new level after completing a deal to sell a third of Opap, the state-controlled gambling monopoly to private investors.
The 33% stake in the incredibly busy operation came with a price tag of â¬652 million ($ 870.52 million) for Jiri Smejc, a Czech investor who runs the Emma Delta Fund. Emma Delta is a partner in an investment group that recently purchased the Greek lottery system.
While the Greek government can be forgiven for taking a fire sale mentality in their dealings with Emma Delta, some European operators have derided the deal as a violation of European Union trade deals.
Both Betfair and William Hill have filed paperwork aimed at taking control of Opap and have accused the Greeks of giving Smejc special treatment.
The companies are also suggesting that Greece is selling itself short by selling off Opap, rather than running it themselves and collecting taxes on its â¬4 billion turnover.
If their complaints, which are backed by the Remote Gaming Association, are successful, it’s possible that the companies could receive some sort of settlement from Greece.
For now, the deal is moving forward.
What do you think of Emma Delta’s Opap purchase? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

http://www.casinoaffiliateebook.com/2013/08/09/pkr-adjustments-affiliate-terms/A few weeks ago, PKR informed affiliates of some major changes to the affiliate terms and conditions that will affect how some affiliates market and are compensated for the players they send. The new language included verbiage on keywords as well as how inactive or dormant affiliates are handled by the PKR affiliate program. The changes are effective September 1st and can be viewed here.
Large and active affiliates such as Poker Affiliate Solutions (including PAS publishers) will not be affected by the new terms and conditions because of the volume of new signups brought to the poker room.
The PKR activity penalties for inactive affiliates will start when an affiliate has not sent any real money players for 3 months (Âsemi-inactive accountÂ) and progresses up to Âinactive account (6 months with no new player sign-ups) and then to Âdormant accounts (no log-in or withdrawal for 12 months). Failure to send new players to PKR can lead to lowered commissions, inactivity fees and even closed accounts, depending on the level of the inactivity.
As with most affiliate term changes, these updates were not greeted warmly by affiliates. In a separate email, PKR responded to some of the criticism by maintaining that the changes Âwould have no little to effect on affiliates that continue to actively promote us.Â

Why Facebook Will Be the Large Winner in On the internet Poker
Is genuine-funds Fb poker the magic bullet the on-line poker market has been searching for at any time considering that Black Friday? On its encounter, it’s undoubtedly acquired a lot of guarantee.
After all, Zynga Poker (formerly Zynga Texas Hold ‘Em) has, at times, experienced as a lot of as fifteen million lively gamers. A lot more just lately, DoubleDown social casino has unseated Zynga as the Facebook casino king and drove Intercontinental Gaming Technology (IGT) revenues by way of the roof.
These achievement stories are just a single of the motives why gaming organizations are tripping in excess of by themselves to create new, true-funds Facebook poker applications. In almost each and every way you can think about, Fb is a great fit for on the web poker gamers and poker affiliates.
If you’re getting completely ready for the entire world of true cash Facebook poker, listed here’s some issues you’ll want to know about its previous and its long term.
Quick Background of Facebook Poker
Zynga very first released Texas Hold ‘Em back again in 2007 and was just 1 of the business’s numerous early hits.
Like all Zynga online games, Texas Keep ‘Em presented a totally free-perform tier the place players could receive chips by means of sport perform, receiving other players to indication up, and other social tactics.
It was a long-tail play that paid off large as little-time gamers happily acquired chips to keep the social gathering heading. (Though there are, in accordance to some stories, as many 680,000 gamers who spend far more than $ 1,100 each year on Zynga games, including poker.)
As a proof-of-idea, Zynga Texas Maintain ‘Em was a smashing achievement that overshadows the firm’s several other difficulties. Though Zynga’s connection with Fb has soured in modern years, the business is just one particular of a lot of company’s that are vigorously pursuing actual-cash gambling/poker applications on Facebook like Bwin.celebration.
Why Facebook Actual-Money Poker Works
Actual-income Fb poker apps are an absolute Godsend for on-line poker companies who are experiencing an ever more competitive environment. Most of these outfits are nevertheless sensation the sting from Black Friday and factors in Europe haven’t been all that excellent possibly. Facebook, however, offers these obtain to a complete new segment of players who might by no means normally gamble online.
1 large gain that Facebook poker provides to the desk is trust. Even though most on-line privacy advocates would argue normally, most Facebook end users really believe in the internet site really a little bit. Any individual who’s been enjoying Zynga Poker for the earlier 6 or 7 a long time possibly received’t feel twice about performing organization with other name brand gaming companies by means of Facebook.
As a reward for operators and affiliate marketers, Facebook is managing a lot of the age-verification and geo-spot obligations from its substantial databases. Throw in an older demographic that’s received a lot of disposable income and all of a sudden, Fb poker turns into a fairly very good offer for everybody concerned – including Facebook.
Why Fb Demands Poker
If you’ve been subsequent Fb for any duration of time, you know the company’s significantly-heralded IPO hasn’t been really as productive as it was promised to be. FB shares didn’t skyrocket on opening working day back again in 2012 and only surpassed their IPO price of $ 38 last 7 days.
One of the most significant reasons Fb inventory never really took off was because the company didn’t offer you considerably in the way of new profits streams. Positive they made funds, but investors want a lot more money and that’s why Fb is these kinds of a gambling-friendly organization.
True-cash poker and on line casino games give Facebook an edge over their greatest rivals, Google and Apple. It also provides them a brand name-new income stream that’s very appealing to investors.
Poker affiliate marketers could barely question for a better predicament. Fb isn’t just the one particular large Web firm that’s pleased to function with gambling organizations, they also provide up a user foundation that includes around 13% of everybody on Earth.
If Facebook gambling actually normally takes off, you can relaxation certain the business will happily assistance the gaming companies who made it all take place.
As it stands nowadays, there aren’t a whole lot of dwell, true-cash Fb poker apps but loads of them are coming down the pike. Some of the big names to watch for incorporate”
- ZyngaPlusPoker – This is the actual-cash variation of Zynga Poker
- PokerStars.net – A genuine shark tank that could bring a pipeline of predators into the relatively tranquil Fb waters.
- IveyPoker – The very first movie star branded real-cash Fb poker app.
These are just a handful of of what claims to be a boatload of poker apps on the world’s most well-liked social networking internet site. So much none of them have actually exploded and the industry stays broad open to new on the web poker website operators and affiliate marketers alike.
What About the Americans?
One particular large, unanswered query about true-income Facebook poker is how it’s likely to be impacted by controlled on-line gambling in the United States. As is stands, Ultimate Poker has a social poker app that allows you to enjoy towards pals online and a Facebook website page, but neither one are truly aimed the controlled US marketplace.
In fact, proven on-line poker brands like PokerStars and Greatest might find by themselves at a downside when competing towards proven social manufacturers like Zynga and DoubleDown.
Finally
Real-income Facebook poker could alter poker affiliate marketers’ fortunes in a massive way. With the assistance of the world’s greatest social community and online poker firms alongside with a billion prospective gamers and some potentially large new marketplaces like the United States – it’s something each and every affiliate should be seeing closely.

Paddy Power Partners with News UK on Sports App

There's no such thing as bad publicity.
Paddy Power is teaming with the News UK corporation and KIA Motors on a sports app for smart phones and tablets. The sponsorship arrangement puts the Paddy Power name on a big selection of Premier League-branded content.
Under the terms of the three-year deal, Paddy Power will be the, betting sponsor, of the Sun+ Goals’ app, as well as, The Goals App for the Sunday Times and The Times. The app will include plenty of video highlights, soccer content from the papers and Paddy Power logos aplenty.
For Paddy Power, the high-end sports content connection is a pretty sweet deal that puts them in front in front of a huge number of sports fans. In a press release, Paddy Power Media Head, Tom Wyse said:
Weâre delighted to be the exclusive bookmaker partner across News UKâs Premier League Rights. Football plays a huge part in both of our businesses and itâs refreshing to work with a partner who shares our brand values so closely.

888 Launching New Jersey On the web Gambling Solution
888 has announced plans to offer a standalone online gaming product in New Jersey. This is in addition to the branded Caesars product it’s offering in that same market.
In a prepared statement, 888 CEO Brian Mattingly saw no conflict of interest with the plan saying, “We are providing the platform for Caesars but we are providing the one-stop shop that 888 is renowned for across Europe.”
In the frenzy of alliances and strategic partnerships that have marked the land rush in the US market, 888 has quietly positioned itself in the cat bird’s seat.
Last March the company quietly incorporated the All American Poker Network (AAPN) as its US subsidiary.
The Delaware-based corporation will act as base camp for Euro-giant’s American operations; wherever they may be. (Besides being one of the states that’s prepping for online gambling, Delaware offers generous tax incentives for businesses willing to incorporate there.)
So far, AAPN has been very busy as the 888-front is prepping a site for Treasure Island that should launch by the end of the month. 888 has breezed through licensing hearings in Nevada which bodes well for their chances of finding success in the other American markets.
All this news has been great for 888 investors who’ve seen the company’s stock price double over the last year.
As of this writing, there’s no word on when 888 plans to launch its New Jersey product.

Bwin.social gathering Administration Shake-Up

Jeffrey Haas (left)
The executives at Bwin.party and PokerStars are playing a game of musical chairs that could help Bwin recapture its flagging poker fortunes.
According to a report in EGR Magazine, poker industry veteran Jeffrey Haas will step into the position of Head of Online Poker at Bwin.party in the next weeks. Haas has been with Rational Group/PokerStars for the last five years where he’s held positions including, Director of Strategy & Business Development, New Platforms and had a big hand in developing mobile strategies.
Haas should have no trouble getting up to speed at Bwin.party, where he once served as a Product Manager.
Chris Welch, Bwin.party’s current Head of Online poker is stepping down after a less-than-thrilling Q2 earnings report. (Though much of the blame for that is being put on some massive new taxes in the German market.)
Despite his departure, Welch’s two-year tenure with Bwin.party was largely successful. During that time he helped shore up the PartyPoker brand and was heavily involved in long-term strategic planning.
Do you think this move can help Bwin.party regain its footing? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Gambling News Roundup – July 28-August 3

Moneymaking Macau.
The online gambling world is not slowing down for summer vacation as New Jersey gears up for regulated online play and William Hill continues shoring up its online presence.
On land, the island of Macau continues running up astronomical revenue, while European investigators gave a little more information about that big European soccer-fixing ring.
Here’s all the big headlines from the last week in gambling.
New Jersey Talks Affiliates – New Jersey’s Gambling Enforcement Division is clarifying licensing standards for ancillary service providers, including affiliates. Though the Division is really focused on branded skins, the new licensing FAQ they posted this week specifically mentions, “marketing affiliates.”
etruvian/PokerStrategy.com Management Shakeup – etruvian Holdings, the parent company of PokerStrategy.com, celebrated its big deal with Playtech by swinging an axe through its corporate offices. The cost-cutting measures were aimed at high cost employees, some of whom were offered pay cuts in lieu of the boot.
Macau Posts Mega-Revenue – The island of Macau is a gambling paradise that raked in a mind-boggling $ 3.96 billion (USD) in gross gaming revenue. For comparison, the Las Vegas Strip casinos did around $ 6.2 billion in all of 2012, while Atlantic City only did $ 3.2 billion.
William Hill Signs Microgaming Deal – William Hill is beefing up its mobile portfolio thanks to a new content deal with Micrograming. Under the terms of the arrangement, the company will have access to the Quickfire Mobile Gaming Platform. It’s just one of many big moves the company’s made since buying back the lion’s share of William Hill Online from Playtech.
Soccer Fixing Scandal Update – Euro investigators are digging into that big soccer fixing scandal and finding a lot of connections to Eastern European organized crime groups, particularly those based in the Balkans. Chief investigator Rob Wain warns that criminals could have the 2014 World Cup in their sites, though most observers think its too big a target for game fixing.
Expect to see plenty more action in the U.S. market in the weeks ahead as more Nevada sites go live and New Jersey operators get ready for their fall launch.

Gold Bars Now Offered on Carbon Poker and Aced
http://www.casinoaffiliateebook.com/2013/08/01/gold-bars-now-offered-on-carbon-poker-and-aced/Rakeback at Carbon Poker and Aced ended in February. Since then, some rakeback affiliates have had difficulties attracting sign-ups at previous levels due to the lack of incentive for rakeback players at other US facing poker rooms. Carbon Poker and PAS hope to change that with the introduction of a promotion not available anywhere else — Gold Bars.
Gold Bars Summary
Gold Bars, like the promotion introduced and currently running at Titan Poker, William Hill and Gala Poker, will award increasingly large cash rewards the more players play. Gold Bars is similar to a Rake Chase in that players receive cash rewards based on activity. Players will continue to earn the same standard rewards in addition to this promotion — this promotion is simply an extra boost!
Gold Bars, which are worth $ 50 in cash, are paid to players before the 15th of the month following the month the Gold Bars were earned. PAS players will receive one $ 50 Gold Bar payment for every 1,000 Gold Bar Points. For every 5 Gold Bars that are earned, players will receive “bonus” Gold Bars, further increasing return. Gold Bar Points are earned at a rate or 1 per 5 VIP Points.
